The Chesterfield Canal - a virtual Tour,
part 4: Shireoaks - Worksop

10Shireoaks Bridge1.jpg
An additional lock has been built above Shireoaks to overcome mining subsidence. It has been named Boundary Lock both because it is near the boundary of Yorkshire with Nottinghamshire and also because it is on the edge of a cricket field.
The bridge at Shireoaks had been demolished in the early 1960s and made into an earth embankment (see next pic)

There are three locks in the Shireoaks Flight and this picture shows how the lower two have quickly blended into the landscape.

In the early 1960s, this road was built across the canal so that buses could get into Rhodesia village. (see next pic)

In Rhodesia, two low level bridges have been replaced (the further one being shown in the previous pic). This picture was taken on January 7th, 2000 when the work was nearing completion.
Stret (nearest) and Deep locks were derelict and have been rebuilt. The Lock Keeper pub is a new canalside business.

The official opening of Morse Lock on June 7th 1996. Morse Lock had been derelict and the head of navigation for more than forty years.
