The Chesterfield Canal - a virtual Tour,
part 3: Norwood - Shireoaks

The canal from Shireoaks to the eastern portal of Norwood Tunnel was restored and reopened in 2003 after more than seventy years of disuse.

Norwood Tunnel

As a committed member of the Trust but without much spare time I was lucky to be present when British Waterways launched a boat into the Eastern portal. The boat was aluminium powered by an electric motor and battery. Signalling was by air horns between the two-man crew and a safety engineer left outside, in case of any foul air or gas in the tunnel. They navigated right up to the Oct 1907 collapse and reported the extremely good condition of the navigated section. When they left, they left a metal cover over the entrance but within 3 days vandals had removed this so I phoned BW and the entrance was rebricked.
