The Chesterfield Canal - a virtual Tour,
part 1: Chesterfield - Staveley (updated March 25, 2005)

The original canal basin in Chesterfield. This was abandoned circa 1890 when the Great Central Railway was built across it. The railway was more recently replaced by the A61 Chesterfield Bypass
A short section of the River Rother was used to link the basin to the line of the canal. The derelict land on the right is to be developed with a new canal basin.

Tapton Lock No1 was reopened by Canal Society Volunteers in 1990: The lock keepers cottage was built as late as 1960 and is now used as a visitor centre by the canal's new owners, Derbyshire County Council
