The Chesterfield Canal - canal & towpath stoppages

Canal & towpath stoppages

Updated April 11, 2008

(Winter) stoppages for the canal are as follows:

14 April , probably till September 2008

Restoration at Renishaw

Restoration is actually starting on another mile of canal at Renishaw. Towpath will be formally closed from Monday 14 April , probably till September 2008, whilst contractors are on site. I attach the formal notice of closure and a map of the site. Fortunately, closure should cause very few problem as the Trans Pennine Trail runs very close by.

TOWPATH CLOSURE AT STAVELEY

The towpath from the end of the restored section of canal at Mil Green, Staveley, to the vicinity of Bellhouse Lane ,Staveley will be closed from 23 April 2007. The nearby Trans Pennine Trail will also be closed in the same area, as will part of the Arkwright Trail near the junction with the TPT and towpath at Lowgates.

It is possible for pedestrians and cyclists to by-pass the diversion using local streets and roads.

The closure will be for up to 99 weeks. It is because of the construction of the Stavely link road to the new junction 29a of the M1. Canal restoration will eventually benefit from the construction work, as the present low level bridge across Hall Lane will be rebuilt to allow boats to pass under.
