The Chesterfield Canal is ideal for walking along its entire length. The towpath is called The Cuckoo Way and is clearly signposted for all 46 miles from Chesterfield to West Stockwith.

Our second Chesterfield Canal Walking Festival will run from 14th to 22nd September. For more information, click here.

You can download lots of different walks along the full length of the canal by clicking here.

There is a guide entitled A guide to the Chesterfield Canal, which is the bible of the cut. It has history, wildlife, boating and walking information as well as lots of photographs. This was originally written by Christine Richardson, the Trust’s historian, and John Lower, a long time stalwart member who has covered almost the entire waterways system. They have very generously donated the rights to the Trust and we have published an updated version. Tapton Lock Visitor Centre has copies in stock (01629 533020), or you can buy it from our Shop.

For a really detailed map, try Waterways Routes by clicking here. This costs £4 to download, but the Derbyshire and unrestored sections are free by clicking here.
