| Well Dressing features canal |
|
27th June The Well Dressing at Old Whittington this year depicts the Chesterfield Canal. A magnificent image was created to combine with the Old Whittington Gala. The image shows a boat cruising along the canal about to enter a lock. It was done by a new group of ladies called The Old Whittington Well Dressing Group. There are eighteen members whose previous experience ranges from many years to complete beginners. The whole thing cost nothing. The new frame was donated by Arnold Laver Timberworld. The scaffolding was also donated. The clay base is reused every year. The flowers, leaves, seeds etc. which make up the image were all taken from gardens or hedgerows. The Chesterfield Canal Trust was delighted when the idea of making the canal the subject was first mooted last winter. Trustee Rod Auton said “We are always keen to bring our beautiful canal to the attention of the public. I had expected something pretty good but was astonished by the quality of the finished article. The Well Dressing Group has earned the thanks and admiration of all our members.” Many of the local people say that it is the best Well Dressing that they can ever remember. It will be on display opposite St. Bartholomew’s Church until 3rd July.
