The 22 locks from Cinderhill to Kiveton Park are known as the Giant’s Staircase. The Turnerwood flight has 7 locks and the Thorpe flight has 15 locks. The latter includes two double and two triple staircase locks. At one point, from Stone Lock, there are 20 locks within a mile. This is believed to be the most locked mile of any working canal in the country. Restored in 2002/3, many of these Grade ll listed locks have their original 18th Century bywashes, which are unlined and full of plants – a feature not seen elsewhere on Britain’s canals.
On top of all this, the surrounding woods will be full of spring flowers – great carpets of yellow and white.
These one way trips leave at 10.30 a.m. and take about 4½ hours.
Afterwards passengers will need to make their own way back to their transport, either by walking (3½ miles) or using the train (4 minutes). Both Kiveton Park and Shireoaks stations are one minute from the canal.
Hot and cold beverages will be available for purchase on the boat and passengers are advised to bring a packed lunch.
There will be a short stop at Turnerwood.
